CLEANSING TURMERIC & GINGER TEA (RECIPE)

When it comes to charismatic healing gurus look no further than turmeric.  It’s not just a sunny bright spice to curry up dishes, it’s also commonly used in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine. Turmeric originates from the root of the Curcuma longa plant, which is a member of the ginger family and it’s one of nature’s most powerful healers and a true guru.

I know you will relate to this cleansing tea with its alkalizing and detoxifying properties which provide powerful anti-inflammatory action within your body. Turmeric is a superhero ingredient to help heal and prevent dry skin, slow aging, diminish wrinkles and improve skin’s elasticity.

Indian women use turmeric as a facial cleanser and exfoliant. If you are using fresh turmeric, handle with care as it stains easily. If you do happen to turn your favorite garment yellow try squeezing on lemon juice or eucalyptus to remove the stain.
So here’s to my number one health guru turmeric. Make it yours too!

Ingredients
  • 250 ml (9 fl oz/1 cup) almond or rice milk
  • 2 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1 tsp finely grated ginger
  • 6 drops stevia liquid

Method
  1. Add the almond milk to small saucepan and heat gently until it reaches room temperature.
  2. Add the turmeric and ginger to a mug.
  3. Pour a small amount of warm milk into the mug and stir to create a liquid paste, ensuring there are no lumps.
  4. Add the remaining milk and sweeten with stevia.
  5. Enjoy.

Ingredients
  • 2 cups of coconut milk. I highly recommend this coconut milk - it's the only one without preservatives and is just pure coconut in BPA free cans. (You can also use almond milk)

Turmeric Golden Milk Tea FAQs
My recipe has gained popularity over time and I’ve received many questions about it. I created this list of commonly asked questions to address the most frequently asked ones:

I am Pregnant/Nursing or I have a certain health condition. Can I drink this tea? I recommend speaking with your doctor or your Naturopath before consuming any natural remedy. Some sources say consuming culinary amounts is fine and other sources contraindicate that with certain conditions and with certain medications, so be sure to consult with your doctor first.

Can I use other milks (almond, rice, cows milk) or even water instead of coconut milk?Yes you can!  You can make it with any of these. It won’t be as creamy, but you can even make this recipe with plain water or bone broth instead of any milk at all. If you don’t use milk or broth, consider adding a tiny amount of some kind of fat (like butter or coconut oil) as it increases absorption and will be best for supporting the anti-inflammatory properties of this tea.

When should I drink this? You may drink this tea anytime of the day or night.

How many cups should I drink per day? I would listen to your body, but 1-4 servings per day is average depending on your health goals.

Can I use fresh turmeric root? Yes, you can grate a 1 in. piece of fresh turmeric root into the recipe. You may then want to strain it with a fine mesh strainer to remove any pieces or remaining pulp.

Do I drink this hot or cold? You may drink it either hot or cold – it really is just personal preference.

Can I make a large batch and store in the fridge? Absolutely. I’ve made up to half a gallon and kept in the fridge, drink within a week. I also enjoy it cold too, but it can also be reheated in a small saucepan.

Can kids drink this tea? Small amounts are fine. Keep in mind that turmeric is a spice. They love the taste and they will love to help you make it, but check with your pediatrician if you have any questions or concerns before drinking this.

VEGAN ZUCCHINI BASIL SOUP

Last summer, I had a lucky opportunity to spend a few weeks in France visiting vineyards, tasting wine, and of course eating great food. Whenever I travel, I come back with a list of recipes that I might want to recreate. Very often, the ones I actually end up making in my kitchen… the ones that stand out in my memory the most… are the simplest.
Jack met me toward the end of the trip which left me with some time alone in Paris while waiting for his flight to arrive. I knew exactly how to spend the day – I headed to the store Merci. Have you been there? It an Insta-worthy store full of home goods galore and it’s the sort of place that you should go to without your significant other because he’ll likely get impatient while you’re looking at every beautiful bowl, spoon, and table-scape. They also have the cutest little library-themed cafe that was just perfect for my afternoon alone. The soup du jour was zucchini basil soup. “It’s a cold soup,” the waiter warned me before I ordered it. I thought – great, I love gazpacho. But when it came it wasn’t gazpacho at all – it wasn’t ice cold and it wasn’t too acidic. It was this lovely bright green room temperature soup served with toasted garlic bread and it was perfect.

I’m not sure what took me so long to make this soup at home but when method reached out wanting to partner on a series of posts inspired by the herbal scents of their new kitchen hand wash, I immediately thought of this soup. Their plant-derived formula is specifically made to get food scents off your hands – especially pungent flavors like garlic. If you’ve ever gone to bed (hours later) with garlic hands, you’ll appreciate this kitchen wash
Plus, the pretty basil bottle is pretty on your kitchen counter top.

I’ve tried to make basil soups before I realized that my mistake was in trying to heat it. The basil gets bruised and it can turn bitter. By keeping the soup at room temp (I like to serve it lightly chilled), it retains all of its fresh, vibrant flavor. The only thing that gets cooked here are the leeks (well, and the garlic-y croutons). After that, it all goes into the blender and voila!
There’s no cream or cream substitute. The blended zucchini and a scoop of hemp seeds makes this soup plenty creamy and, not to mention, light and healthy.
For depth of flavor I added a scoop of white miso paste. To make it bright, I added a bunch of lemon of course.

Blend until smooth and then add the basil last so that it doesn’t get hot from the heat of the blender.
Top the soup with toasty garlic croutons – this step is not optional. They really balance the “health” taste of this soup and make it nicely substantial. As always, soups taste better on the second day so this is a great make-ahead lunch option.

Zucchini Basil Soup

Serves: serves 4
Ingredients
§  ⅔ cup sliced leeks (the tender white and light green parts only)
§  extra-virgin olive oil, for drizzling
§  1 garlic clove, chopped
§  2 small zucchini, chopped + a few strands of spiralized or julienned zucchini for garnish
§  ¼ cup hemp seeds
§  juice of ½ lemon, more to taste
§  ½ tablespoon miso paste
§  1 cup water, more as needed for consistency
§  ½ cup packed fresh basil
§  sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
garlic croutons:
§  2 cups cubed sourdough bread
§  ½ garlic clove, minced
§  Extra-virgin olive oil, for drizzling
Instructions
1.     Slice the white and light green parts of the leek into rings. Rinse well, drain, and let dry.
2.     Heat a drizzle of olive oil in a small skillet over medium-low heat. Add the leeks and a pinch of salt and cook until very soft, 5 to 8 minutes. Taste one, the leeks should be a bit translucent and should not have a bitter taste. Stir in the garlic and cook for another 30 seconds. Remove from the heat.
3.     In a blender, combine the leek mixture with the zucchini, hemp seeds, lemon juice, miso, water and a few grinds of pepper and blend until smooth. Add the basil and blend again. Taste and adjust seasonings, adding more lemon for brightness and salt to taste. Add more water if you prefer a thinner consistency.
4.     Make the garlic croutons:
5.     Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. On the baking sheet, toss the croutons with the garlic and a drizzle of olive oil. Bake until crisp, about 8 minutes.
6.     Serve the soup at room temperature, or lightly chilled, with the garlic croutons and a drizzle of olive oil.

THIS POPULAR ARTIFICIAL SWEETENER IS ACTUALLY A POWERFUL INSECTICIDE

In an effort to reduce sugar content, many people reach for artificial sweeteners to make their coffee or tea taste a little better. You might think that those little colored packets are saving you from a few extra calories or helping you lower your sugar content. The truth is, artificial sweeteners can be dangerous to the body. It turns out that one popular sweetener is actually a powerful pesticide.

Truvia sweetener is made from about 99.5% erythritol, a sugar alcohol, and 0.5% rebiana. Rebiana is an extract from the stevia plant. Researchers found that fruit flies fed with food that included erythritol or Truvia died much sooner than flies fed with food containing other types of sweeteners.

Fruit flies usually live between 39 and 51 days. The study found fruit flies that ate the Truvia ingredient erythritol died in less than a week. The study was published in the journal PLOS ONE.

The Dangers Of Erythritol
Erythritol naturally occurs in some fruits and fermented foods, but the kind that’s being added to food and beverages today is man-made from GMO cornstarch. Here’s why erythritol is dangerous to consume:

1. It Can Cause Gastrointestinal Problems
Erythritol and other sugar alcohols are known for their link to digestive issues. Some of the most common side effects of erythritol are unwanted gastrointestinal side effects, including diarrhea, gas, cramping, bloating and stomachache.

2. It Can Lead To Overeating
The sugar alcohols in artificial sweeteners don’t get processed by your body the way regular sugar does. When you eat foods containing artificial sweeteners, your body is not able to metabolize the sugar. This is why you can end up still feeling hungry after you’ve eaten. The body is unable to feel full, which can lead to overeating and weight gain.

3. It’s Genetically Modified
The erythritol in Truvia is derived from cornstarch which comes from genetically modified corn. This makes Truvia about 95% genetically modified. Many studies have shown that GMO’s are dangerous to the body. They have been linked to infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, and faulty insulin regulation, among other problems.

4. It’s Commonly Combined With Artificial Sweeteners
Erythritol is not as sweet as regular sugar on its own. To add more flavor, it’s often combined with other questionable artificial sweeteners like aspartame. When combined with these sweeteners, the product becomes even more health threatening. Studies have shown that aspartame can cause serious side effects. They include anxiety, depression, short-term memory loss, weight gain, fatigue, brain tumors and more.

Natural Sweeteners
If you use Truvia or other artificial sweeteners, it’s time to get rid of them. There are several more natural ways to sweeten up your coffee or tea without putting your health at risk:

  • Agave – Agave has more calories than sugar, but it’s low on the glycemic index. This makes it a better option that sugar. The best part is, it’s sweeter than sugar. You only need a small amount to sweeten your drink.
  • Cinnamon – Cinnamon is a low-calorie option to add just the flavor you need. Add a dash or cinnamon to your coffee or tea to make your taste buds dance!
  • Honey – Honey has some amazing antioxidant benefits. It can give your body an immune system boost!

THIS SPICE CUTS YOUR RISK OF HEART ATTACK BY 56%

If you haven’t cleaned out your spice cupboard in a while, now is the time. If you reach all the way to the back, you might be able to find a hidden gem. This orange spice is rich in antioxidants, it has powerful anti-aging properties and its anti-inflammatory benefits are unmatched. To add to its list of benefits, a new study has found that this spice can even decrease your risk of heart attack. If you can’t find turmeric hiding in your cupboard, it’s time to stock up!

The Study
Study after study has shown the natural health benefits of turmeric on the body. It protects the brain, prevents inflammation and it can even help the body fight cancer. In case that wasn’t enough, a new study has shown that turmeric also provides amazing benefits for the heart. A study published in the American Journal of Cardiology has found that turmeric extract can decrease heart attack risk by an astounding 56%.

Turmeric Improves Heart Health As Much As Exercise
In 2012, a study published in the Nutrition Research journal found that consuming turmeric or turmeric supplements can improve one’s cardiovascular health as much as aerobic exercise. Are you wondering how that’s even possible? It all comes down to the primary polyphenol in turmeric, known as curcumin.
The 8-week long study involved 32 postmenopausal women who were assigned into three groups. The women were put into either a control group, an exercise group or a curcumin group. Researchers monitored the inner lining of the womens’ blood vessels by measuring flow-mediated arterial dilation. A disturbance of this function is considered a key cause of the development of atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a disease in which plaque builds up inside the arteries. It can lead to a heart attack, stroke and even death.

After eight weeks, researchers found that flow-mediated dilation increased significantly in both the curcumin group and the exercise group. The researchers concluded, “The present study showed that regular ingestion of curcumin or regular aerobic exercise training significantly improved endothelial function…. suggesting that curcumin may prevent the age-associated decline in endothelial function in postmeopausal women.”
In case that was too much to follow, curcumin was found to have similar effects as exercise when it comes to preventing plaque build up inside the arteries, which is a main cause of heart attack.
Turmeric For The Heart
While turmeric shouldn’t replace physical exercise, studies show that it’s able produce some of the same cardiovascular health benefits. Here’s how to consume turmeric for the heart:
The study suggests taking 150 mg of turmeric extract (equal to 25 mg of curcumin) every day for eight weeks to enhance heart function. In turmeric powder, the curcumin content is usually 2%. Keep this is mind if you choose turmeric powder. You can consume one teaspoon or turmeric daily, or purchase turmeric extract capsules. Adding turmeric to your diet is easier than you might think. You can add a pinch here and there to your food or tea. You can also drink tumeric juice or tumeric lemon water to reap the heart-healthy benefits!
